Estate & Trust Fine Art Appraisals

JSK Fine Art Appraisals provides independent, USPAP-compliant fair market value appraisals of fine art for estate and trust administration, date-of-death valuation, equitable distribution, estate planning, probate, and federal estate tax purposes when applicable.

We work with collectors, families, executors, trustees, fiduciaries, attorneys, and other professional advisors to determine an appropriate scope of work and provide clear, well-supported valuations for paintings, prints, works on paper, sculpture, photography, and other fine art.

When Is an Estate or Trust Art Appraisal Needed?

A professional fine art appraisal may be needed for:

  • Date-of-death valuation
  • Estate and trust administration
  • Probate
  • Equitable distribution among heirs or beneficiaries
  • Estate planning
  • Federal estate tax reporting, when applicable
  • Establishing fair market value prior to the sale or distribution of artwork
  • Documenting a collection for attorneys, trustees, executors, or fiduciaries

The purpose of the appraisal determines the appropriate type of value, effective date, research, and scope of work.

Fair Market Value & Date-of-Death Appraisals

Estate and trust appraisals generally rely on fair market value, which considers what the artwork would reasonably sell for in the appropriate market between a willing buyer and willing seller, with neither under a compulsion to buy or sell and both having reasonable knowledge of the relevant facts.

For estate assignments, the appraisal may require a retrospective value as of the owner’s date of death or another appropriate effective date established for the assignment.

Market conditions can change significantly over time, so an older insurance appraisal, purchase price, gallery price, or previous valuation may not accurately reflect fair market value as of the required date.

What Is Included in the Appraisal?

The scope of each assignment is tailored to the collection and intended use of the report. Depending on the assignment, the appraisal may include:

  • Detailed identification and description of each artwork
  • Photographs and relevant identifying information
  • Artist, title, medium, dimensions, inscriptions, and markings when available
  • Provenance and ownership information provided or discovered during research
  • Condition observations relevant to value
  • Research into the appropriate market
  • Comparable auction sales and other relevant market data
  • Fair market value conclusions as of the appropriate effective date
  • Explanation of the valuation methodology and market considered
  • Appraiser certification, qualifications, and supporting documentation

For assignments intended for federal estate tax purposes, reports are prepared with consideration of applicable IRS valuation requirements and current professional appraisal standards.

Appraising Larger Art Collections

Not every artwork in an estate necessarily requires the same level of research.

For larger or varied collections, JSK Fine Art Appraisals can help determine an appropriate scope of work based on the purpose of the appraisal, the nature of the collection, the anticipated market for the artwork, and the needs of the intended users.

In some cases, preliminary review can help identify which works warrant more extensive research and which pieces may be appropriately valued using a more streamlined approach.

This can make the appraisal process more efficient while still providing the level of support necessary for the assignment.

Working With Attorneys, Trustees & Families

Estate and trust assignments often involve several parties, including family members, executors, trustees, attorneys, accountants, fiduciaries, and other advisors.

We understand the importance of clear communication, discretion, documentation, and maintaining an independent appraisal process.

When appropriate, we can coordinate directly with the professionals involved in the estate or trust to clarify the intended use, effective date, reporting requirements, and scope of the appraisal before research begins.

Fine Art Appraisals in San Diego & Southern California

JSK Fine Art Appraisals is based in San Diego County and serves clients throughout Southern California, including San Diego, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, Orange County, Palm Desert, and surrounding communities.

In-person inspection is available for collections throughout the region. Certain assignments may also be completed remotely when photographs, documentation, and the intended use of the appraisal allow for a credible remote scope of work.

Start an Estate or Trust Appraisal

If you are managing an estate, trust, or inherited art collection, the first step is usually a brief review of the collection and the purpose of the appraisal.

You can send photographs, an existing inventory, prior appraisals, or other available documentation. From there, we can recommend the appropriate scope of work and provide a clear proposal before beginning the assignment.
